Re-enforces commitment to its Women’s Economic Empowerment program
New Delhi, January 28: Walmart India, a wholly owned subsidiary of Walmart Stores Inc., today announced an innovative entrepreneurship development program for women-owned businesses (WOBs) with the aim of enhancing their skills, capability and sustainability. The company is working with WEConnect International and Vrutti to implement the training program.
This initiative is designed to help women entrepreneurs achieve higher levels of business growth through a training curriculum, which will be delivered through workshops and mentoring sessions with technical experts, established women-owned businesses (WOBs), academic experts and business managers.
The first phase of the program will include participation of 25 WOBs in the regions of Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Applications for the program will soon be available on websites of Walmart India (www.wal-martindia.in), WEConnect International (http://weconnectinternational.org/en/india) and Vrutti (http://www.vrutti.org).
Announcing the program, Krish Iyer, President and CEO, Walmart India, said, "I am extremely delighted to support women-owned businesses as part of our supply chain in India. Enhancing the capacity of women entrepreneurs and providing them with the skills to scale up their business will ultimately help Walmart India continue to offer great assortment and quality local products to our customers.”
Walmart has an ongoing commitment to empowering women around the world and helping WOBs succeed and grow. In September 2011, Walmart launched its Global Women’s Economic Empowerment (WEE) initiative, using its unique size and scale to improve the lives of underserved women and help WOBs. As part of the initiative, Walmart committed to source $20 billion from women for its US business and double sourcing from WOBs internationally. Walmart India is continuously looking for long-term associations with potential WOB’s and supporting this important work.
Jenny Grieser, Senior Director of Women’s Economic Empowerment for Walmart, said, “We are proud of the work that Walmart India is doing to economically empower women. We know that this isn’t only the right thing to do, but also good for our business growth. Walmart India’s leadership in empowering women will be an example for other countries around the world.”
